Newport Sgiliau (Pilot) Project

How can we help?

Our service

The project is aimed at providing opportunities for young people aged 16-25 not in education, employment or training. The aim is to improve and enhance their prospects of securing an education or training place or employment opportunity and secure appropriate housing and support if needed. The project will be based in an arts and upcycling space where young people will take part in an employability skills-boosting opportunities during which they will receive work experience running the space alongside skills building.

Skills building programme

The skills building programme will include both group work and 1:2:1 sessions. Young people will identify their own goals and be offered opportunities such as basic literacy and IT skills, CV-writing, cover letter writing, interview practice, benefits awareness, careers advice, communication, relationship building, first aid and conflict resolution. The young people can also gain hands-on experience upcycling furniture, clothes and other items which will be available in the shop. The aim of the project is to improve employment prospects for young people in Newport and the surrounding areas through tailored training during the programme and employment support. At the end of their time with the project, young people should know how to write an effective CV, feel prepared for future interviews, and have gained new skills or upgraded existing skills which are desirable to employers.
