What is a Family Group Meeting?

The Family Group Meeting service enables family members, including those in the wider family and friends’ network, to meet together to find solutions to difficulties which they are facing. The meetings will provide an opportunity to make plans about a child / young person and will require that families assume a responsible in deciding how to meet their child / young person’s needs.

The family utilise the skills and experience of their wider family and friends as well as professionals where appropriate. Meetings will form part of a process that facilitates decision making and communication within families. Family members will meet 1:1 with their Family Group Meeting Coordinator and talk about what has happened and how they are being affected by the situation. They will be encouraged to think of ways that can improve their situation.

The Service will provide support to families who might find themselves in need of help during a time of separation or relationship breakdowns where children might be affected.  We can help and support through the convening and facilitation of a Family Group Meeting in order that:

  • Families are empowered and enabled to find their own solutions to their difficulties
  • Families take responsibility for planning in response to the concerns of others
  • Families use the strengths and resources from within their own networks
  • Families have ownership of the problems and solutions and thus are committed to making their plans work
  • Families improve the way they communicate with each other and also with professionals improving the way they make plans and decisions.

What do we hope to achieve?

  • Prevention of whole family relationship breakdown
  • Reunification of families where separation has occurred
  • To improve communication between parents and carers
  • Support and improve communication between separated parents and carers.
